Installing an EV Charger? Don't Make This Costly Wi-Fi Mistake

If you're upgrading to an Electric Vehicle (EV), installing a smart home EV charger is usually top of the list. However, after watching scores of EV chargers being installed across our local community recently, we've noticed a major oversight happening time and time again.

It's not an electrical issue — it's a Wi-Fi issue.

Smart EV chargers (such as Wallbox, Evnex, or Tesla Wall Connectors) rely on your home network to operate. Without a strong connection, your charger cannot communicate with your smartphone app. That means no schedule-based charging (missing out on off-peak electricity rates), no remote monitoring, and frequent connection dropouts.

Unfortunately, many electricians focus strictly on the power run and overlook testing your network signal. Here is everything you need to know to avoid post-installation headaches.

Step 1: The 30 Mbps "Safe Zone" Speed Test

Before your electrician drills a single hole or mounts the charger, verify your internet signal right at the intended charger location.

  1. Stand exactly where the EV charger will be installed.
  2. Ensure your phone is connected to your home Wi-Fi network (not mobile data).
  3. Open Speedtest.net and run a test.

What to look for: Aim for 30+ Mbps. While an EV charger only requires a tiny fraction of data to operate, getting 30+ Mbps on your phone proves that your Wi-Fi signal is strong enough to cut through thick garage brickwork, concrete walls, and metal roller doors, while withstanding outdoor interference.

Step 2: Lock onto the 2.4 GHz Frequency

Almost all smart EV chargers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. They do not connect to 5 GHz networks.

While 5 GHz is faster at close range, 2.4 GHz travels much farther and penetrates solid walls better. Before running your test, check your phone's network settings to ensure you are testing the 2.4 GHz band. If your router combines both bands under one name, you may need to separate them or adjust your settings so your charger can connect cleanly during setup.

Step 3: Plan Ahead to Save Money (The Cat6 Trick)

If your EV charger is being installed far from your router — such as on a detached garage, carport, or outer pillar — your electrician will already be digging a trench or running power conduits.

Pro tip: Ask your electrician to run a data-grade, outdoor-rated Cat6 network cable alongside the power cable.

Running a data cable while the wall or trench is already open costs very little in extra labor. Doing this allows you to place a Mesh Wi-Fi node directly in the garage or outdoors, guaranteeing crystal-clear Wi-Fi coverage for your charger, smart garage doors, and mobile devices. Trying to fix dead zones after the cable path is sealed is far more expensive.
